Congregation of the Sisters of St. Martha, Thrissur (CSM)
Brief History of the Congregation:-
The Congregation of Sisters of St.Martha was started as a Diocesan Congregation of the Syro Malabar Rite in the Diocese of Thrissur on 15th August, 1948 by a holy and pious Diocesan Priest named Rev. Fr. John Kizhakkoodan, a great visionary of that time. Mar George Alappat, the then Bishop of Thrissur gave approval to the erection of this Congregation by order No. 448/48 dated 20-4-1948. The compassionate founder, who was an instrument of the merciful love of God had unshakable faith in divine providence and dedicated himself to the service of the poor, the needy and the destitute.
It was elevated to the status of Major Archiepiscopal in 1997 a year before its Golden Jubilee by the then Apostolic Administrator of the Syro Malabar Church, Archbishop Mar Varkey Vithayathil.
The Congregation had its humble beginning with a gem of 12 members. We render our services in Syro-Malabar, and Latin Rites both inside and out side India. We launched new mission stations in the Diocese of Sagar, Bhopal, Orissa, Arunachal Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The strength of our congregation at present is 400 professed sisters.
For administrative conveniences two provinces have been erected in 2013, September on the basis of geographical location namely Lourde Natha Province, Thrissur (North) and Good Shephered Province Irinjalakuda (South). There are different convents and other institutions under each province for rendering various charitable and religious activities.
Lourde Natha Province, Thrissur:-
The inauguration of Lourde Natha Province, Thrissur was on September 14, 2013. It has got 23 convents and 160 professed sisters.
Motto of the Congregation: "Love Serves".
Objectives of the Congregation:-
The objectives of the congregation is to serve the destitute, the downtrodden, the working class as well as ordinary people and make them understand and feel the compassionate love of Jesus Christ through our different apostolate by following the footsteps of St Martha, the Biblical Saint, our Heavenly Patroness, who like Jesus Christ our Lord, led a simple and austere life.
Activities of the Congregation:-
Our members are engaged in different fields of apostolate such as healing ministry; family welfare services; pastoral care ministry; education ministry; catechism; service to the old; mentally retarded and handicapped; boarding homes for girls and working women; homes for the disabled and the destitute, evangelization; and counselling
